Hello, world!
Topics: Developer, Personal, Ethical, Philosophical
Hiya! This is my honest attempt at making a full website for everything to do with myself and the things I do. I intend to keep things regularly updated here and treat it as my little corner of the internet. I know, hosting a website in the big '26!
Here you'll find the Crazyblox Games page for Flood Escape 1 & 2, a gallery of my projects, a blog for updates, an FAQ, and a way to ask me anything anonymously.
I've tried doing this a few times before where instead I'd have a crude blog post for updates relating to Flood Escape 2, but there wasn't really a true separation between me and what I do, and the games I make. The FE2 community is aware that my role in developing the game has been mostly handed off to our team at Crazyblox Games, and having that time and privacy to help reapproach things in a way that is more clear in what-lives-where has been instrumental to figuring out how I conduct myself online.
I've always enjoyed being able to interact with others who share the same interest; I get to share what I do, take some feedback and also learn things along the way. What I've come to realise though is that the modern internet as most of us use it today isn't really built to honor that anymore; there's too much noise to make sense of anything!
Most of us use platforms like Twitter, Discord, Reddit... whatever makes you happy. The main grievance I take with these platforms however, is that they don't really make me happy! I've tried to make healthy balances in using these platforms, but all it takes is one slip and, whoops; I've engaged with a post that was intentionally misconstrued, or needlessly inflammatory, or vague without due course of clarification... The clarification never comes for me, and because I engaged with something, even if my experience wasn't positive, that's all it takes for an algorithm to decide that "This type of content is the most-engaging, let's make sure we keep showing this!". Considering how users feel is sub-optimal to an algorithm, and so I can't expect things to change. That would be insanity.
The only exception I can say with confidence that has respected my intent is Bluesky. It's a quieter place, there's less people there, but more importantly, I get to actually fucking choose what I wanted to see in my feeds thanks to being able to customise everything about it, and... get this... I CAN DELETE THE "FOR YOU" FEED! It was a nice safety net to crash into after quitting Twitter; the peace and quiet has been so nice.
Even so, as I've been getting older, I've only been recognising how much more ephemeral everything is, really. Bluesky has been, and will continue to be for some time, a nice space for me to frequent. But as with every platform, we are their visitors, and they get to decide what we see and how we participate. It's true anywhere there's centralisation, but I think a tool is at its best when it behaves so transparently that you're not reminded of the friction that comes with using it. :)
Clearly I've had too much time to think about this... But here I am, talking in my little corner of the internet; regardless of concern, it's nice to have a space where updates aren't required, UI changes don't reduce functionality, nothing gets in the way of doing what we want to do here. I get to ramble a little bit, and hope that it makes sense to some other stranger on the internet that makes their way to this post.
That said, the website will face regular changes as I settle on a format that makes sense. Don't expect anything drastic; I want to keep things as simple and static as I can, so that there's one less reason to lose my time in trying to perfect it. Good enough is good enough.
Thanks for stopping by! If you have any questions, now would be a great time to try out asking me anything. :)
